Species Available to Hunt
The area has a diverse game population: Dall Sheep, Grizzly Bear, Mountain Goat, Mountain Caribou, Yukon Moose, Black Bear, Wolf and Wolverine as mentioned but several species of grouse and ptarmigan also live in the area. The following is a brief overview of the Trophy species of game.
Moose:
Our moose population within the area is estimated at 5200 animals and is slowly increasing. We under hunt our moose to keep our age of bulls harvested high; we take between 0.004- and 0.005 % of the moose population each year. Recently, we received ages back from the bulls harvested and we averaged 7.3 years old which by moose years is quite old! We will hunt moose from early August in the velvet right thru to nearly the end of October after the rut. For single species moose hunts we recommend doing our river or boat hunts. The outfit has had Over 90% success rate in last 20 years and most years 100% opportunity. These big bulls weigh over 1200 lb. and as much as 1600 lb. The hardest part is staying off the trigger… but is required. We are hunting Trophy Bulls!
Mountain Caribou:
This caribou species is the largest bodied of all caribou. We have multiple herds of caribou in our area and hunt every herd. We consistently harvest old bulls with heavy mass that average over 360 net B&C. We have had years that the average was 390 B&C. and we usually take multiple Bulls over 400” each year. We hunt caribou by horseback, and argo/backpack as well as a special late hunt by Pickup truck and ATV. Caribou are taken from August 1 through the end of September, as well as the small number of “Special”late season hunts in October. Late August and early September provide very beautiful white manes and warmer more enjoyable conditions to hunt! We run 100% opportunity of success most years on trophy caribou hunts.
Mountain Goat:
Mountain Goats are one of the most majestic animals in the world. Their large bodies and snow white capes make for a beautiful mount. Yukon goats are at the most northerly part of their range. These goats fur up quicker than most and tend to have the largest bodies with some mature billies coming close to 400 pounds. The horns are similar to any other population of goats with 9-10 inch being average with 5 1/4 inch bases. The guides target the older mature big billies only. We have recently only been hunting our goats in August and the first week of September giving us 100 percent success rate for last 4 years. Ceaser Lake has a high population of goats, which we hunt with both Horses and Backpacking and is the only Yukon area with Mountain goat permits. Concession 22 is truly a special place to chase the king of the mountain.
A Goat hunt combines very well with Mountain Caribou and or Dall sheep, aswell as other animals that may be taken on opportunity are Moose, Wolf, Wolverine and Grizzly Bear provided allocation be available and our Harvest goals.
Dall Sheep:
These beautiful animals are found in isolated pockets through out our concession. We offer two types of hunts. The Argo/Backpack hunt is our Sheep only hunt, while the Horseback hunt or other Backpack hunts can be the combo hunt of a lifetime! Although we sell a Dall Sheep hunt there are Fannin Sheep through out the population. The Argo hunt is in very easy sheep country and has a very high success rate. Backpack hunts are for the adventurous hunters who are wiling to go deep in search of something special.
The Ceaser Lake area has some incredible rams and we manage them for size and age, not quantity. If your looking for a something special this is something to look at.
Other animals that can be hunted on a Dall Sheep hunt on a harvest fee basis are: Goats Yukon Moose, Mountain Caribou, and or Grizzly bear.
Grizzly Bear:
The Grizzly Bear can be one of the hardest animals in North America to harvest. These bears are very smart and elusive. We harvest most of our bears in the fall. We also do take a limited amount of people each spring for a chance at these icons of the wilderness. As with anything the opportunity of success will increase dramatically if you are capable of backpacking and willing to put in an effort! We do have jet boat hunts also which anybody can do. These spring hunts include the harvest of Black Bear as well. We target mature Male bears only. We have a very good quota compared to most areas due to the high populations and vast area to hunt. Single Species hunts are a good option but combine well with other species.
