It’s currently mid-August and our season is already under way. These first few sheep hunts usually give us an opportunity to soak in the sunshine before fall is in full effect, but we haven’t been doing much of that. Relentless rain, heavy wind, snow and fog has been the name of the game as of late. This only help reiterate how important it is to have the right gear to get you through any situation. Perhaps the most important aspect of this is having boots that are capable of doing the job at hand. Happy feet make your mountain time more enjoyable and there is nothing worse than bringing the wrong pair of footwear to the wrong situation.
There are companies that we believe in when it comes down to doing out jobs in the mountains. These are the companies we work with and we wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s why this year we have partnered with Kenetrek Boots to help bring more content that helps show what we do. Dustin has been wearing Kenetrek’s since 2007 and even helped founder and president Jim Winjum complete his grand slam. This partnership is more about loyalty and trust in a company than anything else and we’re beyond stoked that they’re a part of the team.
When it comes to boots, there’s a few things you can do to make sure you’re prepared. The first is breaking in your boots before you go into the mountains. While everyones feet are different and some people don’t need to break boots in, we encourage you to understand how your feet work in conjunction with your footwear and do what best for you. Another mistake is wearing cotton socks, although this is becoming less common. Cotton absorbs moisture and holds it next to the skin. This can increase friction and result in blistering. Finally you want to make sure that you have the proper amount of insulation for the conditions you’re expecting. As we mentioned above, unexpected weather can come at any time in the mountains. Kenetrek offers multiple different insulation options to help make sure you have what you need. Generally, we run non-insulated boots on these earlier hunts and 400g once the first snow starts to fall. These two options can generally get everyone through all of the hunts they’ll encounter with 1000g insulation coming in handy for those bitter cold winter hunts.
The majority of our team runs the Mountain Extremes and Guide Ultra boots. Everyone’s feet are different but we recommend these to our clients highly encourage you to give them a try. Whether you’re chasing Desert Rams on the Baja, or find yourself on a Goat hunt where the weather has taken a turn for the worse, Kenetreks give you the wherewithal to continue hunting no matter what.
While the weather to start this year has been less than ideal, we’ve already got a ram on the ground and it’s shaping up to be yet another successful season and we thank you all for the continued support. We’ll be doing our best to keep providing awesome content and continuing to give updates as the season progresses. Best of luck to all on any and all hunts you may have this fall.
